On August 28, 2025, the Quang Tri Provincial Party Committee hosted the scientific conference titled “Free Trade Zone Models in Some Countries Worldwide - Lessons for Quang Tri,” organized by the Propaganda and People’s Mobilization Board of the Provincial Party Committee. The conference aimed to realize Quang Tri’s socio-economic development plan, fostering cooperation with provinces in Laos and piloting the Lao Bao - Densavan Cross-Border Economic and Trade Zone.
Key Highlights:
- Political Foundation: General Secretary and President endorsed Quang Tri’s proposal to establish a Free Trade Zone (FTZ), leveraging the East-West Economic Corridor, connectivity with Laos, seaports, and regional supply chains.
- Conference Objectives: To clarify theoretical foundations and international experiences regarding FTZs, draw lessons for Quang Tri, and provide insights for local agencies and businesses on the potential of this model.
- Significance of FTZs: FTZs are not merely economic-technical models but also strategic tools and “institutional laboratories” for testing preferential policies on investment, customs, finance, land, and e-commerce. They help Quang Tri reposition its role, leveraging geographic advantages, trade corridors, and logistics potential.
- Quang Tri’s Potential: Its strategic location in the North Central region, with three international land border gates (Lao Bao, La Lay, Cha Lo) and two deep-water seaports (Hon La, My Thuy), supports the development of logistics and cross-border trade along the East-West Economic Corridor.
- International Experiences and Proposals:
- Da Nang and Hai Phong are the first localities in Vietnam approved to pilot FTZs, setting a precedent for Quang Tri.
- Proposals: Develop a locally tailored FTZ plan, enhance infrastructure, innovate management practices, attract investment, and integrate high-quality urban and service systems to draw talent.
Conclusion: Establishing an FTZ in Quang Tri presents a breakthrough opportunity to enhance competitiveness and integrate into regional and global value chains, leveraging local advantages to expand development westward.
